Classification of the finite simple groups

Description of the research project

The main purpose is to contribute to the revision of the classification of the finite simple groups. Here we are concerned with groups of characteristic two type. The central point is to use the amalgam method to receive new proofs. There are two lines. The first one is within the existing project of Gorenstein/Lyons/Solomon. Here we have done the so called uniqueness case using the amalgam method. The second line is to give a proof of the whole characteristic two classification using the amalgam method as the main tool. This goes back to an idea of U. Meierfrankenfeld.
