Oscillations and traveling waves of intracellular free calcium concentration are not only physiologically important, they also raise many challenging theoretical questions. Their study is thus an ideal opportunity for collaborations between theoreticians and experimentalists. In my talk I’ll present a brief background to the field (to show you why we should care about it at all), and then discuss some recent modelling questions that have arisen in the study of how calcium oscillations control saliva secretion.
